For quick, clean and easy setup go to: www.philips.com/urc After installing the universal remote control SRU 5120 you can operate a maximum of 2 different devices with it: TV and DVD player/HDD/recorder or VCR. 2 2.1 1 Installing the remote control Inserting the batteries Press the cover inwards and slide it in the direction of the arrow. 1 1 2 3 Place two AAA type batteries into the battery compartment, as shown. Replace the cover and click it firmly into place. Installing the remote control 3 ENGLISH Table of contents 2.2 Testing the remote control The remote control has been programmed to operate most Philips devices. Because the SRU 5120 may use different signals for each brand and even for different models of the same brand, it is advisable to test whether your device responds to the SRU 5120.The example below (TV) instructs you how to do this.You can repeat the same steps for other devices (DVD player/recorder or VCR) which you want to operate using the SRU 5120. Example of TV: 1 Turn your TV on manually or use the original remote control.Tune to channel 1. 2 Press the TV key to select TV. · The key lights up. 2 · If the key does not light up, check whether the batteries are properly inserted (see `2.1 Inserting the batteries'). 2 ENGLISH 3 Check whether all the keys are working. 3 For an overview of the keys and their functions see `3. Keys and functions'. · If the TV responds as it should to all of the key commands the SRU 5120 is ready for use. 3 Tip If the device does not respond at all or not to all of the key commands, follow the instructions under `2.3 Setting the remote control', or for online setup go to: www.philips.com/urc. 2.3 Setting the remote control This is only necessary if your device does not respond to the SRU 5120. If that is the case, the SRU 5120 does not recognize the brand and/or model of your device and you need to program the remote control to do so.The example below (TV) instructs you how to do this. You can repeat the same steps for other devices (DVD player/ recorder or VCR) which you want to operate using the SRU 5120. 4 Installing the remote control Example of TV: 1 Turn on the TV manually or use the original remote control.Tune in to channel 1. 2 Look up the brand of your TV in the code list at the back of this manual. A four-figure code is shown for each brand. Note the code for your brand. 4 4 Be careful! There are separate tables for TV, DVD and VCR. Make sure you use the codes from the correct table. 3 Press the TV key until it flashes twice and then remains lit. 5 5 4 Then enter the code noted in step 2 using the numeric keys. 6 6 5 · The TV key now flashes twice. · If the key flashes once for an extended period, the code has not been entered properly or the wrong code has been entered. Start again from step 2. Press and hold the Stand-by key of the SRU 5120 until your TV switches off (stand-by). 7 Then release the key immediately. 7 · The SRU 5120 is now set to operate your TV. Installing the remote control 5 ENGLISH 6 ENGLISH 7 Check if you can operate all functions on your TV with the SRU 5120. · If a key does not function properly, keep it pressed until it works. Then release the key immediately. Repeat this for every key that does not work. · If the TV responds to all of the key commands, the SRU 5120 is ready for use. Do not forget to note your code. Keep the TV key pressed for 5 seconds to exit setup mode. 8 · When no key is pressed for 2 minutes or more the remote control will exit setup mode automatically. When setting the remote control for other devices, be sure to enter and exit setup mode with the appropriate mode key. DVD for DVD player/ recorder and VCR. Full search setup If your code does not work or if the brand of your device is not mentioned in the code list, you can try setting the remote control with full search setup. 1 Press the mode key of the device you wish to set up the remote control for. E.g. the TV key. Press the key until it flashes twice and then remains lit. 9 9 2 Press and hold the Stand-by key of the SRU 5120 until your TV switches off (stand-by). 10 Then release the key immediately. 10 · The SRU 5120 is now set to operate your TV. Full search setup takes about 5 minutes. 6 Installing the remote control The illustration on page 2 gives an overview of all keys and their functions. 1 2 switches TV or DVD on or off. · Text TV on/off (TV). · disc menu (DVD). / FAV(orites) · Electronic Program Guide (TV). · list of favorite channels. / HDD · wide screen TV (TV). · Hard Disk Drive menu (DVD-R). / LIVE · Text TV off (TV). · live program on currently selected channel (TV, Radio). 3 Text TV color keys. Used in text mode and in some on-screen menus. 4 MENU turns the menu on and off. 5 Cursor keys cursor up, down, left, right in a menu. 6 INFO displays on-screen channel information (TV). 7s mutes the TV sound. 8 - VOL + adjusts the TV volume. 9 Numeric keys direct choice of channels and other functions. 10 A/V switches between external inputs of your equipment. 11 5 / PICTURE · rewind (DVD/VCR). · changes picture/screen settings (TV). 2 / AUDIO · play (DVD/VCR). · changes audio settings (TV). 6 / ENLARGE · wind (DVD/VCR). · enlarges Text TV picture (TV). 9 / SUBTITLE · stop (DVD/VCR). · changes subtitle settings (TV). 0 record (DVD/VCR). ; / HOLD · pause (DVD/VCR). · holds current Text TV page (TV). 12 / selects between one- and two-figure channel numbers (TV). 13 P1P / TITLE · selects previous programme/ channel (TV). · title, chapter (DVD). 14 - PROG + / K J · selects a previous or following channel (TV). · selects a previous or following track (DVD). 15 OK confirms your selection. 16 BACK jumps back one level in the menu or turns off the menu. 7 y Stand-by / DISC Keys and functions ENGLISH 3 Keys and functions 17 TV / DVD ENGLISH device mode selection keys: · select TV or DVD mode. · blink when the remote control is set up for the selected device. · light up when a remote control command is sent to the selected device. Note If the device does not respond at all, or not to all of the key commands, follow the instructions under `2.3 Setting the remote control'. 4 Extra possibilities 4.1 Adjusting device selection (Mode keys) The SRU 5120 is default set for operating TV or DVD. You can select the device you wish to operate with the TV and DVD keys. Each mode key allows operation of one device only. If desired, you can program the keys to select a different kind of device. For example, if you want to operate a second TV. In the following example you will see how to configure the DVD key for a second TV. 1 2 Switch on the second TV. Press the DVD key to select DVD. · The key lights up. 11 11 3 Then keep keys 1 and 6 on the SRU 5120 pressed simultaneously for three seconds, until the DVD key lights up. 12 12 8 Extra possibilities 4 Press keys 9, 9 and 2 in that order. 13 ENGLISH 13 5 Press the TV key to select TV. Press the key until it flashes twice and then remains lit. 14 14 · The DVD key flashes twice. The DVD key will now allow you to operate your second TV. 6 Program the SRU 5120 to operate the second TV. See `2.3 Setting the remote control'. 4.2 1 Restoring the original functions of your remote control Keep keys 1 and 6 on the SRU 5120 pressed simultaneously for three seconds, until one of the mode keys (TV or DVD) flashes twice and then remains lit. 15 15 2 Press keys 9, 8 and 1, in that order. 16 16 · The mode key (TV or DVD) flashes twice. All original functions have now been restored and any extra functions have been deleted. Extra possibilities 9 5 Frequently asked questions ENGLISH In this chapter you find answers to the most frequently asked questions about your universal remote control. How do I set the remote control for combo devices (TV/VCR, TV/DVD, DVD/VCR, etc)? Some combo devices require you to set up two different source selection keys to control both parts of the combo device. For example, if you have a TV/DVD combo, you might need to set up one code under the TV key to control the TV and a separate code under the DVD key to control the DVD. The device I want to operate does not respond and the mode key (TV or DVD) does not flash when I press a key. Replace the old batteries with two new AAA batteries. The device I want to operate does not respond but the mode key (TV or DVD) does flash when a key is pressed. Point the SRU 5120 at the device and make sure that there are no obstructions between the SRU 5120 and the device. The SRU 5120 does not respond properly to commands. Try programming the SRU 5120 again. If the device still does not respond, call our helpline. The Text TV keys do not work. · Find out whether your TV is equipped with Text TV. · Maybe the SRU 5120 has to be adapted to the model of the device.
